When communication changes
Defensiveness reduces. Listening increases. Emotional safety begins to return.
And from there, real progress becomes possible.
It's Not the End of Your Relationship. There is a way back! If your relationship is not how you would like it to be, you're not experiencing a lack of love.
What's happening is far more common
You will likely be experiencing a pattern of unhelpful communication that has crept into your relationship.
They're usually caught in a style of communicating where:
One person feels unheard, dismissed, or not understood, while the other feels criticised, blamed, or shut down.
Conversations escalate, or avoid what really matters and the same issues keep repeating without resolution
Over time, this creates distance, frustration, and sometimes a quiet sense of giving up.
But these patterns are not permanent. They are learned, and they can be changed.
During our work together at Relationship Counseling Christchurch we won't just talk about your relationship, I show you something very specific: exactly what to say, and how to say it, so your partner can actually hear you.
This includes the words you choose, the tone you're using, when and how you respond, and the subtle signals your partner is reacting to. I pick these up as I hear you talk and interact together. Small shifts here can produce immediate and noticeable differences.
From almost 40 years of supporting couples to do their relationships better I have noticed that there are two distinct styles of communication that couples tend to drift into. One will destroy their relationship and the other will strengthen it.
Fighting Talk
Here's an instance of the communication style that will destroy it:
"You never help with the kids in the evening"
"I'm working all day, what more do you want?"
"I'd just like you to care"
I call this Fighting Talk: it produces tension, friction and distance in the relationship.
Caring Talk
And here is an instance of the style that strengthens it:
"Evenings feel overwhelming for me. Could we find a way to share the load?"
"I didn't realise how pressured you felt. I'm ok about discussing how we can do our evenings better."
This is Caring Talk: a subtle but powerful shift, which tends to draw couples together.
When communication improves, defensiveness reduces, listening increases, and emotional safety begins to return.

Final Note
When left unchanged, unhelpful communication patterns tend to repeat and often deepen over time.
But with the right guidance, they can change.
And when they do, the relationship can begin to feel very different.
